Overview

The trek begins with a scenic drive to Sonamarg, where you’ll start your journey at 7,800 ft. Over the course of the trek, you’ll ascend through lush meadows, thick forests, and high-altitude pastures, including Vishnusar, Kishansar, Gadsar, Satsar, and Gangbal lakes. Each lake is unique, offering serene views and a tranquil atmosphere, with Vishnusar being especially captivating with its frozen beauty if you trek in July.

As you reach the highest point of the trek, Gadsar Pass (13,800 ft), you’ll experience breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks. The trek is moderately difficult, with steep ascents and descents, but it rewards trekkers with unrivaled views of alpine lakes, glaciers, and vast meadows.

Throughout the journey, you’ll also experience the warmth of Kashmiri culture. At Gangbal Lake, you’ll be treated to a performance of traditional Kashmiri songs and dances by the local staff. The trek not only offers a physical challenge but also allows you to connect with nature, culture, and the spirit of adventure.

The journey concludes with a descent to Naranag, where you'll drive back to Srinagar, making this trek an unforgettable and fulfilling Himalayan adventure

Eligibility Criteria

  • Age: 15 to 65 years.
  • Physical Fitness: Must be in good health with moderate physical fitness.
  • Experience: Previous trekking experience is recommended, but beginners with good fitness can also join.
  • Medical Conditions: Not suitable for people with heart conditions, respiratory issues, or severe medical problems.
  • Mental Preparation: Ability to cope with challenging and strenuous conditions in high altitudes

  • Trekking Gear: Rucksack (with rain cover), day pack, head torch (with spare batteries), UV protection sunglasses, water bottles (2 x 1L), trekking shoes, slippers/sandals
  • Clothing: Quick-dry track pants, sweatshirts, thermal body warmer, woolen cap, waterproof gloves, rainwear (jacket & pants), woolen socks (2 pairs), full-sleeve sweater
  • Toiletries: Personal toiletries kit (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, etc.), sunscreen lotion, lip balm
  • Safety & Extras: First aid kit, camera (optional), dry fruits & snacks, small lunch box, plate, spoon, mug

    Day 1: Arrival at Sonamarg (7,800 ft)

    The adventure begins with a scenic 90 km drive from Srinagar to Sonamarg, taking around 3 hours. You'll be picked up from the Tourist Reception Center (TRC) in Srinagar and head towards Sonamarg, a picturesque valley surrounded by snow-capped peaks and lush meadows. Upon arrival, you’ll set up camp near the Sindh river at Shitkadi Village. The day is spent settling in, soaking in the beauty of the landscape, and getting to know your fellow trekkers. As there are no shops in the area, make sure you have all the essentials needed for the trek. You'll also need to carry your ID proof (in original and copies) for submission at the army check post. This day serves as a peaceful introduction to the trek, preparing you for the exciting days ahead.

    Day 2: Sonamarg to Nichnai (11,500 ft)

    On Day 2, the trek begins with a hearty breakfast and an exciting journey as you trek from Sonamarg (7,800 ft) to Nichnai (11,500 ft). The 9 km trek will take approximately 6 hours. The trail starts through lush meadows and dense forests of pine, maple, and Bhoj trees. Along the way, you’ll pass through the Shekdur area, where you can take a break, enjoy a warm meal like noodles and omelet, and relax. After passing an army check post, the trail continues along the Nichnai Stream, offering stunning views of the Sonmarg Valley and Thajiwas Glacier. You'll reach Nichnai by afternoon, where you’ll set up camp for the night. This day is filled with natural beauty, perfect for getting into the rhythm of the trek and appreciating the pristine surroundings.

    Day 3: Nichnai to Vishnusar Lake (12,000 ft)

    Day 3 begins with a morning breakfast, and the trek from Nichnai (11,500 ft) to Vishnusar Lake (12,000 ft) is a 12 km journey, taking about 7 hours. The day starts with a steep ascent to Nichnai Pass, followed by a descent towards Vishnusar Lake. En route, you'll get a glimpse of the majestic Kishansar Lake. After reaching Vishnusar Lake, take some time to explore its stunning surroundings. If you're trekking in July, the lake may still be frozen, adding to its mystique. If the weather allows, you can even try your hand at fishing in the lake with permission from the Srinagar Fishing Department. The campsite near Vishnusar Lake is spacious and offers a perfect environment for relaxation. You can enjoy a game of volleyball or cricket with fellow trekkers, while keeping an eye out for shepherds and their flocks who frequent the area.

    Day 4: Acclimatization and Exploration Day at Vishnusar Lake

    Day 4 is set aside for acclimatization and rest, allowing your body to adjust to the higher altitude. This day is crucial for ensuring a safe and enjoyable trek ahead. If the weather permits, you can explore the surrounding area, including a visit to Kishansar Lake, which is approximately 1.5 km from the campsite.

    If the weather is not favorable, this day can also be used as a buffer day to rest and acclimatize, ensuring you’re ready for the more challenging segments of the trek ahead. The decision to use the buffer day will be made by the trek leader based on the current conditions. This day gives you a chance to relax, take in the stunning scenery, and bond with your fellow trekkers, preparing you for the adventure in the coming days

    Day 5: Vishnusar Lake to Gadsar via Gadsar Pass (13,800 ft)

    Day 5 starts early as you trek from Vishnusar Lake to Gadsar via the Gadsar Pass, the highest point of the trek at 13,800 ft. The trail takes a steep ascent to the pass, offering panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. On your way, you'll also see the stunning Kishansar Lake. After reaching the pass, the trail descends gradually to Gadsar Lake and the Gadsar campsite. Before reaching the campsite, you'll pass through another army checkpoint to submit your ID proofs. This challenging day is rewarded with breathtaking views and the feeling of accomplishment after crossing the pass.

    Day 6: Gadsar to Satsar

    On Day 6, you’ll trek from Gadsar to Satsar, passing through vibrant meadows that are blanketed with wildflowers during the peak season (mid-July to mid-August). The trail is relatively easier, with a few uphill and downhill sections. En route, you'll encounter a couple of small lakes often mistaken for the Satsar Lakes, before reaching the Satsar twin lakes. These lakes, nestled between towering peaks, are a tranquil spot to rest and enjoy the serene surroundings.

    Day 7: Satsar to Gangabal Twin Lakes via Zaj Pass (13,000 ft)

    Day 7 brings an exciting challenge as you trek from Satsar to the Gangabal Twin Lakes, passing over the Zaj Pass at 13,000 ft. The ascent to Zaj Pass offers stunning views of Mt. Harmukh and its glacier. From the pass, you'll descend toward the Gangabal Lakes and set up camp at Nandkol Lake, a pristine spot nestled among the mountains. After the day's trek, you can visit Gangabal Lake, one of the largest lakes of the trek, and enjoy the breathtaking views. In the evening, experience the traditional Kashmiri songs and dance performed by the local staff.

    Day 8: Gangabal to Naranag and Drive to Srinagar

    On the final day, the trek descends from Gangabal to Naranag. The 15 km descent takes you through pine forests, and while it’s easier on the legs, it requires caution for your knees and ankles. The trail leads to Naranag, where you'll be picked up for the drive to Srinagar. After a scenic 70 km drive, you’ll reach Srinagar by 6:30 PM, concluding the trek with memories of the pristine lakes, mountain vistas, and the camaraderie of your fellow trekkers
