Kareri Lake

Overview

Kareri Lake Trek is one of Himachal’s most scenic short treks, perfect for beginners and nature lovers. Located near Dharamshala, this glacial lake sits at the base of the Dhauladhar range, offering mesmerizing views of snow-covered peaks, pine forests, alpine meadows, and gushing mountain streams.

The trail passes through remote Himalayan villages and dense rhododendron forests, eventually leading to the pristine Kareri Lake, fed by melting snow from the Dhauladhar mountains.

Inclusions

Stay: Dome tents on sharing basis

Meals: Nutritious vegetarian meals (B/L/D) from Day 1 lunch to Day 3 breakfast

Experienced trek guide and support staff

Camping equipment (tents, sleeping bags, mats)

First aid and emergency support

Forest permits and entry fees

Exclusions

Transport to/from Dharamshala (can be arranged at extra cost)

Things to carry

• Trekking shoes, warm jacket, thermals
• Water bottle, personal toiletries, torch
• Raincoat or poncho, sunglasses, sunscreen
• Backpack (30–40L), woolen cap, gloves
• Govt. ID (original & photocopy)

Who can join

• Age: 10 years and above
• Basic fitness required – ability to walk 6–8 km daily
• No prior trekking experience needed
• Not suitable for people with heart or respiratory issues

Kareri Lake itinerary

Day 1: Dharamshala/Mcleodganj to Kareri Village (Drive) + Trek to Rioti Camp

Drive to Kareri Village (1.5 hrs)

Trek begins toward Rioti (~6-7 km) through forests and wooden bridges

Camp overnight by the stream near Rioti

Day 2: Rioti to Kareri Lake and Return to Rioti Camp

Trek to Kareri Lake (~4 km)

Explore the beautiful lake and Dhauladhar views

Return to Rioti by evening for camping

Day 3: Rioti to Kareri Village + Return to Dharamshala

Trek back down to Kareri Village

Drive to Dharamshala/Mcleodganj
