Kedartal Trek Itinerary
Day 1: Rishikesh to Gangotri (Drive – 240 km / 8-10 hrs)
Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Rishikesh to the holy town of Gangotri, nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas. Enjoy views of the Bhagirathi River, lush pine forests, and terraced villages along the way. On arrival, check into a guesthouse. Spend the evening exploring the ancient Gangotri Temple and soaking in the spiritual atmosphere.
Day 2: Acclimatization Day at Gangotri
Today is dedicated to acclimatization to prepare your body for the high altitudes ahead. You’ll take short hikes in and around Gangotri, visit Pandava Gufa, and witness the mighty Bhagirathi River crashing over the rocks. An early night’s rest will help you gear up for the trekking days to follow.
Day 3: Trek from Gangotri to Bhoj Kharak (9 km / 5-6 hrs)
The trek begins! The trail ascends steeply through pine and birch forests, with occasional glimpses of snow-capped peaks. You’ll trek alongside the Kedar Ganga River, a tributary of the Ganga. Camp overnight at Bhoj Kharak, surrounded by rugged terrain and crisp mountain air.
Day 4: Bhoj Kharak to Kedar Kharak (4 km / 4-5 hrs)
Today’s trail is short but challenging, with rocky paths and loose boulders. As you gain altitude, the landscape transitions into alpine meadows with stunning views of Thalay Sagar (6,904 m) towering above. Camp at Kedar Kharak, a vast meadow offering an unforgettable stargazing experience.
Day 5: Kedar Kharak to Kedartal (5 km) and Return
An early morning push takes you to the shimmering Kedartal Lake (15,500 ft), cradled by majestic peaks. It’s a glacial lake formed by the meltwaters of Thalay Sagar and Brighupanth. Spend time soaking in the surreal scenery before retracing your steps back to Kedar Kharak for the night.
Day 6: Kedar Kharak to Gangotri (13 km / 6-7 hrs)
Descend all the way back to Gangotri, retracing the trail through Bhoj Kharak. The descent is quicker but equally scenic. Once at Gangotri, enjoy the comforts of civilization and share stories with fellow trekkers over hot food and local chai.
Day 7: Gangotri to Rishikesh (Drive – 240 km)
After breakfast, begin your return journey to Rishikesh. Reflect on the breathtaking journey through the high Himalayas as you descend back to the foothills. Arrive in Rishikesh by evening – trek complete, memories made for a lifetime
